Duas vezes atleta olímpico, Renato Rezende foi vice-campeão na Copa América de Downhill, neste domingo, 20 janeiro 2019. Gabriel Giovannini faturou o bicampeonato em São Roque, no interior paulista.
Em uma prova com dois donos de títulos da competição e dois atletas de BMX, o duas vezes atleta olímpico ficou no segundo posto, atrás apenas do, agora, bicampeão Gabriel Giovannini .
Buscando vaga em Tóquio 2020, Rezende apostou na disputa como treinamento para entrar mais rápido no ritmo de competição e acabou fazendo o segundo melhor tempo do dia na nova pista do Ski Mountain Park.

Com muita força na largada, Gabriel Giovannini conseguiu tomar a frente para se livrar dos dois atletas de BMX.
Mas a tranquilidade do atual campeão foi temporária. Com Rezende pressionando na perseguição, os ciclistas desceram muito bem, colocando força para ganhar velocidade. Giovannini aproveitou a descida final para deslanchar e garantir a vitória.
“Estou feliz com o resultado, com um gostinho de chegar perto disso. Giovannini está andando muito. Parabéns para ele. Ele está diferenciado nessa pista”, analisou Rezende. “Eu larguei bem, o cara largou melhor ainda, pedalou mais forte e é isso ai. A gente continua firme”, destacou o atleta, que também colocou em dúvida sua participação na Copa América do próximo ano.
No BMX, Renato Rezende chegou a ser o número cinco do mundo em 2015. Dois anos mais tarde, entretanto, sofreu uma fratura no pé e ficou fora competições, caindo também no ranking e saindo do Top 200. Em boa recuperação, Rezende fechou 2018 como número 36 do mundo. No último ano, Rezende foi terceiro na Copa América.
