O BMX freestyle park percorreu um longo caminho em pouco tempo. A primeira Taça do Mundo UCI, gerida pela Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) em colaboração com o Festival Internacional de Desportos Radicais (FISE), só teve lugar em 2016. Antes de ser apresentada no Tokyo 2020, a disciplina será exibida em a etapa olímpica nos Jogos Olímpicos da Juventude (YOG) Buenos Aires 2018. Uma excelente oportunidade para alguns dos jovens pilotos se prepararem para Tóquio 2020.
"Vai ser enorme para o nosso esporte", disse Dhers sobre a recente decisão de incluir o evento nos Jogos de Tóquio 2020. "Isso vai ajudar os melhores pilotos e também mostrará o mundo livre do BMX."
Há um sentimento generalizado de que o público vai gostar do que vêem. O evento é uma mistura cheia de adrenalina de truques e saltos ultrajantes, que ocorrem em uma série de rampas e grandes obstáculos, todos instalados em um parque de 30mx50m. Os atletas completam duas corridas de um minuto cada, procurando impressionar os juízes com a dificuldade, originalidade, estilo, fluxo, risco, altura e execução de seus truques.
Dhers, que aos 32 anos é figura de padrinho no freestyle, tem certeza de que aparecer no palco olímpico trará uma mudança positiva na percepção mais ampla de seu esporte.

BMX freestyle park has come a long way in a short time. The first fully-fledged UCI World Cup, run by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in collaboration with the International Extreme Sports Festival (FISE), only took place in 2016. Before being featured at Tokyo 2020, the discipline will be on display on the Olympic stage at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Buenos Aires 2018. An exciting opportunity for some of the young riders to prepare for Tokyo 2020.
“It’s going to be huge for our sport,” Dhers said of the recent decision to include the event in the Tokyo 2020 Games. “It’s definitely going to help the top riders and it’s also going to show the world BMX freestyle.”
There is a widespread feeling that the audiences are going to like what they see. The event is an adrenaline-fuelled mix of outrageous tricks and jumps, taking place over a series of ramps and large obstacles, all set up within a 30mx50m park. Athletes complete two one-minute runs each, looking to impress judges with the difficulty, originality, style, flow, risk, height and execution of their tricks.
