O celebrado surfe brasileiro está mais perto de um reconhecimento além das ondas. Nesta quinta-feira, Gabriel Medina e Maya Gabeira foram indicados ao prêmio Laureus de melhor atleta de esporte de ação.

Eles concorrem com a também campeã mundial de surfe Stephanie Gilmore, da Austrália; e com os atletas de snowboard Anna Gasser (Áustria), Chloe Kim (EUA) e Shaun White (EUA). A cerimônia da principal premiação do esporte anunciará o vencedor no dia 18 de fevereiro, em Mônaco.
Em 2018, Gabriel foi campeão de três etapas da WSL e conquistou seu segundo título mundial, depois de ter vencido o circuito em 2014. Já Maya bateu o recorde de maior onda surfada por uma mulher, ao encarar 20,72 metros desde a crista até o topo em Nazaré, em Portugual, em janeiro do ano passado.
— Estou muito honrada por estar entre tantos atletas incríveis este ano na categoria de esportes de ação. E saber que há tantas mulheres nomeadas esse ano é muito inspirador — disse a brasileira.
Os vencedores são escolhidos por um júri esportivo da Laureus World Sports Academy composto por 66 dos maiores nomes do esporte.
O Laureus indicará destaques em outras seis categorias. A disputa para o melhor atleta do ano tem nomes variados, como o tenista Novak Djokovic, o piloto Lewis Hamilton e os destaques da Copa da Rússia Mbappé e Modric, além do queniano Eliud Kipchoge, do atletismo, e de LeBron James, da NBA.
A variedade dos indicados também é uma marca da disputa pelo prêmio de melhor equipe. Duas forças dos gramados — a seleção da França e o Real Madrid — se juntam ao Golden State Warriors, da NBA; a Mercedes, da Fórmula 1; e às equipes de golfe da Europa e a delegações norueguesa que disputou os Jogos de Inverno.

The celebrated Brazilian surf is closer to an appreciation beyond the waves. This Thursday, Gabriel Medina and Maya Gabeira were nominated for the Laureus award for best action sports athlete.

They compete with also world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia; and the snowboarders Anna Gasser (Austria), Chloe Kim (USA) and Shaun White (USA). The ceremony of the main prize of the sport will announce the winner on February 18 in Monaco.
In 2018, Gabriel was champion three-step WSL and won his second world title, having won the circuit in 2014. Maya holds the record for largest wave surfed by a woman, the face 20.72 meters from crest to the top in Nazaré, in Portugual, in January of last year.
"I'm honored to be among so many great athletes this year in the action sports category. And knowing that there are so many women named this year is very inspiring, "said the Brazilian.
The winners are chosen by a sports jury of Laureus World Sports Academy composed of 66 of the biggest names in the sport.
Laureus will feature highlights in six other categories. The contest for the best year athlete has different names, such as the tennis player Novak Djokovic, the pilot Lewis Hamilton and the highlights of the Cup of Russia Mbappé and Modric, beyond the Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, Athletics, and LeBron James, the NBA.
The variety of nominees is also a hallmark of the best team award. Two lawn forces - France and Real Madrid - join the Golden State Warriors of the NBA; the Mercedes of Formula 1; and to the golf teams of Europe and the Norwegian delegations that disputed the Winter Games.
